05/30/2008 - Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Bobby Abreu went 3-for-4 with two triples and scored four times, as the New York Yankees edged the Minnesota Twins, 6-5, in the opener of a four-game set from the Metrodome.
Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui and Melky Cabrera each had three hits and a pair of runs batted in for the Yankees, who have won two in a row and seven of their last nine overall.
Mike Mussina (8-4) got the win after he threw six innings, giving up just four runs -- two earned -- on six hits, while fanning four and walking one. Mariano Rivera earned his 14th save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
Justin Morneau went 2-for-4 with a solo home run for the Twins, who saw their four-game win streak come to a halt. Alexi Casilla was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Michael Cuddyer, Jason Kubel and Delmon Young had a hit and an RBI each.
Glen Perkins (2-2) took the loss after he lasted just four innings and gave up five runs on 10 hits with two walks.
The Yanks pulled ahead 5-4 in the fifth. Abreu led-off with a single, and a Rodriguez double brought him home.
Abreu led-off the seventh with a triple and Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Dennys Reyes was then called in from the bullpen and gave up an RBI infield single to Matsui. The Yankees were sitting on a 6-4 cushion heading into the home seventh.
Kyle Farnsworth took over on the mound for New York in the eighth and surrendered a lead-off homer to Morneau, making it a one-run game.
Rivera was called in for the ninth to close it out and got Mike Lamb to ground out. Brendan Harris, though, became just the second batter this season to work a walk from Rivera. Carlos Gomez went down swinging and pinch-hitter Craig Monroe was caught staring at the third strike to make it official.
The Yankees wasted no time in getting on the board. Abreu worked a one-out walk and stole second base. Two batters later, Matsui singled to left to plate Abreu and extend his hitting-streak to eight games.
The Twins jumped on top 4-1 in the home first. Casilla had a one-out single and Joe Mauer followed with a walk. Morneau then hit a grounder down the first-base line that Shelley Duncan fielded and threw to Derek Jeter at second for an easy double play ball, but the throw pulled Jeter off the bag. Everyone was safe and the bases were loaded before Cuddyer, Kubel and Young clubbed consecutive RBI singles. Lamb then hit a scorcher up the middle that Jeter dove at, caught, and relayed to second to get Young, but Cuddyer crossed home.
New York inched its way back in the third. Abreu tripled on a ball to left and scored when Rodriguez singled to left, and the Yankees cut the lead to 4-2.
Duncan led-off the fourth with a walk and Robinson Cano followed with a single. Jose Molina offered a sac bunt, moving both runners into scoring position. Cabrera then belted a single to center, plating both runners and knotting the contest at four.

“You play to win the game!”
Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.
The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.
The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.
Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?
Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.
Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.
Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.
Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.
The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.
Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.
Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.
This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.
First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”
The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.
Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
